Cara Laura,

sono un teatrante incallito, ho un figlio e molti nipoti che si dimostrano molto dotati per il teatro, la musica e la scrittura, ma mi sono sempre rifiutato di appoggiarli o presentarli nelle loro avventure. 

Mio figlio Jacopo poi, per anni, si è addirittura cambiato nome e cognome nel firmare i suoi lavori. Oggi che non ha più bisogno di presentazioni mi ringrazia per essere stato così intransigente davanti a qualsiasi forma di nepotismo. Ma oggi ho scoperto di possedere una nipote, la figlia di mio fratello Fulvio, che non soltanto ha doti notevoli nell’inventarsi immagini teatrali, ma è oltretutto di una modestia commovente; per anni si è rifiutata di farmi conoscere i suoi lavori perché diceva di non volermi disturbare. 

In questi giorni mi è capitato finalmente di vederli e poterli apprezzare. Sono composizioni sceniche, o meglio scenografiche, che mi hanno entusiasmato per la freschezza e la fantasticheria delle quali sono composte. Oltretutto non sono composte con trucchi tecnologici allo scopo di stupire, ma sono prodotte come giochi di bambini, usando collages, ripitture, proiezioni prospettiche alternate a particolari rubati dal teatro reale. 

A ’sto punto però mi rendo conto che composizioni di questo genere non si possono raccontare… l’unica è godersele dal vero, aiutati dalla propria immaginazione.

Dear Laura,

I am a true man of the theatre, I have a son and many nieces and nephews who have shown to have a remarkable talent for the theatre, music and writing, but I have always refused to help them or introduce them in their adventures.

My son Jacopo even changed his name and surname for years when he signed his works. Today he needs no introduction, and thanks me for having been so inflexible towards any form of nepotism. However, today I have discovered I have a niece, the daughter of my brother Fulvio, who not only has remarkable skill and imagination as she invents theatre-related images, but is also modest to an extent that is moving; for years she has refused to let me see her works, saying that she did not want to bother me.

Recently however I could see them, and was able to appreciate them. They are scenic, or, rather, scenographic, compositions. I am impressed by their freshness and by the imaginative world they bring to life. Also, they are not made using technological tricks that aim at impressing the audience; they are produced as if the were a child’s game, using collages, re-painting, perspectival projections alternated with details stolen from real life theatre.

At this point, though, I realise that compositions such as these cannot be told or narrated…. the only way is to enjoy them in person, helped by one’s imagination.

Well done Laura, I am proud to share your surname.
